New Orleans quarterback Derek Carr pledges to to keep his faith as 'No. 1' after becoming a 'Saint'

Incoming New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has insisted he is going to continue putting God first after inking his $150million contract with the team.

The Saints agreed to a four-year deal worth a reported $150m to acquire the former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback last week and he put pen to paper on his contract on Saturday.

The 31-year-old, who almost gave up his NFL career to become a Christian pastor, made it clear that he intends to continue making his faith a priority after signing his new deal.

'My faith is number 1. That will never change, no matter what, good or bad,' Carr said at his introductory press conference at the weekend, via Breitbart

He continued to explain that his faith was a big part of his and his family's life but insisted it didn't mean that he would force his religion on people.

'I'm not gonna sit up here and throw Bibles at everybody, but I do have faith and I do believe,' he said Saturday.

'That's how we raise our children, and that's what the basis of our marriage is on. I love my wife because of the way that I am loved and how I learned that love.'

It is perhaps quite fitting that Carr has become a 'Saint' after nine years with the Raiders.

The Pro Bowler joined New Orleans to become the franchise's starter and he revealed that his faith helps him in his role as a leader.

'How do I add value? Be a blessing, not a burden to anybody in this building,' he said.

He added that he and his family carry out subtle acts of Christian charity throughout their lives and intend to continue to do so in New Orleans.

'We like to make sure that the impact we're making isn't for everyone to see,' he said of his aspirations in the community.

'For us, there's a lot of stuff we do that — it's the one person that you run into at Target that may need a little help, or there's that one person at the gas station.'

'We always try to be open to that, and what the Lord is saying to us,' he added.

Carr has previously said in a profile on his website that God is the reason he plays football.

Carr's future with the Raiders, the team that drafted him in 2014, was effectively over before last season even ended. The four-time Pro Bowl selection was benched in late December. The Raiders were 6-11, missing the playoffs one year after finishing 10-7 and reaching the Wildcard round.

In his nine seasons with the Raiders, Carr played for six head coaches, went 63-79 as a starter and led the team to the playoffs twice without a win. He didn't play in the 2016 season postseason game due to a broken leg.
